About Me
Sarah Hucal is a freelance multimedia journalist, videographer and producer based in Berlin and Athens. After starting her journalism career in New York City more than a decade ago, the native Michigander relocated to Berlin and has since covered a wide range of topics — from human trafficking in Thailand, digital privacy in Germany, the tourism industry in Greece and interior design and architecture in Italy and Lebanon (to name a few!).
She has contributed to Politico Europe, ABC News, The Guardian, Al Jazeera English, US News and World Report, DW (Deutsche Welle), Curbed, Time out New York, The Miami Herald, the Bangkok Post, the New York Observer, and Mongabay conservation news, among other publications.
Sarah currently works as a video journalist, TV presenter and videographer for the travel and lifestyle departments of Germany's international broadcaster DW (Deutsche Welle), producing, shooting and editing travel segments, including long-form YouTube documentaries for DW Travel and lifestyle program Euromaxx.
For seven years, Sarah worked as the Germany & Austria producer for US broadcaster network ABC News, producing segments for World News Tonight and Good Morning America, among other programs. Her interest in reporting on migration has taken her around the world, from Colombia and Spain. In 2019, she was a fellow at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York City, in the Dart Center global reporting institute program "Reporting on Refugees and Migration Through the Eyes of Young Children." She also received a reporting stipend from the institution to cover Venezuelan migration to Colombia in 2019.
Sarah also works as a voice-over artist for long and short-form documentaries and produces, shoots and edits reels for the Instagram accounts of DW Travel and Euromaxx.
Sarah received an M.A. in Global Studies from Humboldt University in Berlin. The program focused on the economic, political and cultural aspects of globalization on the global South. Through the program, she spent semesters at FLACSO Argentina in Buenos Aires and Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. Sarah holds a B.A. in Communications Studies and B.M. in Vocal Performance from the University of Michigan.
In her free time, you will find her studying Turkish and Greek folk music and playing the oud on a Greek island.
